Nepal, somewhere near Gokyo. And somewhere before the idea of ​​running through Russia

The idea of ​​the race across Russia was born just 9 months before the start of the race . It was in Nepal, while I was conquering the highlands of this beautiful country. I had a task to meet my birthday with a view of Everest, and I did it. The conditions were tough: no budget (10 tr. For a hike to Everest .. what ?!), poor experience in high-altitude hikes, no support, because even there was no Internet, and I walked alone. In general, the conditions were Spartan, you can read more in the articles about this trip on the site. I met my birthday, I completed the program as much as possible and thought about the eternal – what to do next?The question arose – what next is interesting for me to do. The conquest of Everest did not cause me enthusiasm either before I saw it or after, because this is a laborious, expensive and dangerous business, and life can be spent more interesting. It remained to choose how.

The guy I was physically strong, which was shown by the journey to Everest in the rainy season. I was also attracted by new places and beauty, because the world is huge and diverse, and it is worth seeing with my own eyes. These things come together in the idea of ​​overcoming great distances using the strength of your muscles. Even the bike seemed like cheating and something superfluous. I wanted to check what my legs and body are capable of. Immediately I thought about the location of this test. It turned out that everything is simple – where, if not in the largest country in the world, to look for distances and beauty, especially in terms of costs and implementation, it seemed the most affordable option.

All that remained was to get out of the mountains and start preparing for a new and incomparable test in my life.

Training

It is difficult to overestimate the preparation for such a project. At the same time, the preparation is very versatile, and if you do it alone, then it is also very difficult. As with any complex task, I divided it into smaller and simpler sub-tasks.

The material part is to earn money, collect equipment

The psychological part  – attitude, motivation and work on discipline

Informational part – collection of any useful information. This is a new business, which means that tons of materials need to be processed, and it would be good to find and filter them first.

Support – search for sponsors and support for loved ones, as well as like-minded people.

Physical preparation – to bring the physical form to the result necessary for the start.

For each position, you can write an article, and in general there would be enough material for a book, of course I will not write it, as a poet in brief about the whole process.

Back in Nepal, I began to collect information about who had already done something similar, and who is doing it now. I think this is the best way to gain knowledge. There was terribly little information at that time, since there are not so many inadequate ones like me in the world. Russia was crossed without transport in our century, and even about 10 people wrote something about it, and probably no one was running at all. But there was Alexander Kaper , who ran between cities and was preparing just a very similar project. Race from Moscow to Vladivostok (and after the changes to Beijing).

I started to get acquainted with running , there is no other way to say it. Of course, I ran in pairs at school and at the university, but this is at the level of instincts and without a minimal theory of the process . This was not an easy task.

Upon returning to Russia, he began the practical part – training . It was the end of August in the yard, the rainy season was approaching, in the common people autumn. From the state of zero to the first kilometers for a race without rest, I walked for several months. Complicated by overworked knees after climbing the hills to Everest, I also got a tattoo on my arm, which paused training for a couple of weeks.

At the same time, he made up the route, continued information collection , especially on the theory and technique of running. Autumn is a great time for running – neither hot nor cold, sometimes it rains, but they have no effect on running. Those who love comfort will not agree with me, as they will never agree to such a project.

In winter it became more interesting not because it was cold, snowy and slippery, but because it was necessary to earn money. Traditionally, I worked in industrial mountaineering. In winter, it is 99% removal of snow and ice from roofs. The work is hard, dangerous and cold.  For 8 hours to the waist in the snow, swing a shovel, and sometimes a sledgehammer, and then go for a run – great! Running 50-60 km every day turned out to be harder, but not by much, so the preparation turned out to be excellent!

Budget

From the very beginning, there were two options for the run – autonomous and with escort . Here not only the budget is different, but in general there are two different projects. In one run alone, pull everything on yourself, there is something that I can find in cafes and sleep wherever I have to. Super light gear is welcome, but it costs like a plane. Another option with an escort car. You can sleep in it, they are less afraid of bears, be more mobile and, most importantly, it is not necessary to carry all the equipment on yourself. Running empty or with ten kg behind your back is just a huge difference, especially without the experience of such a run and pumped muscles.

Autonomy somehow came out cheaper and more affordable, but the chances of successful completion of such undertakings were sharply reduced. So I didn’t give up hope to the end to go to the escorted option, more because there is a high probability of meeting bears along the way. It’s scarier than getting tired or hungry.

In total, during the preparation, I managed to earn about one hundred thousand for the mileage, not counting tickets and equipment purchases. True, I never received a little more than 70 thousand . The company I worked for was slowly dying, delaying payments, and so it died, leaving behind a huge debt. That is, three quarters of the money earned, calculated for food and goodies along the way, did not come to me and this played a significant role in the results of the race.

I spent about 15 thousand rubles on equipment and clothes. Very little – it was clear then and now, but I could not do anything about it. The more expensive the equipment, the more convenient and lighter it is, and accordingly, the higher the chances of success for the entire event. Since the goal was to test strength, and not to overcome the distance, I was not very worried about this, which again affected the result.

A ticket to Vladivostok from Moscow cost me 12 thousand rubles  and I bought it strongly in advance, back in the fall, and the flight was in March. This was done to save money and mark the border for which everything should be ready. From Kirov to Moscow by train, that’s another 2 thousand rubles.

All this together weighed very thoroughly, more than 7kg for sure . Not a running set at all. And before the start I had to change a lot …

What a twist!

After all the preparation, when I arrived in Moscow with all the equipment for the autonomous race, I met with friends. Max Chebykin was in the company , I had seen him only once or twice in Kirov in the same gatherings with friends. He got fired up with the idea of ​​such a race and offered to take part in it as an escort car driver and co-organizer. And we agreed. Also, Olga joined the project , who was involved in the entire background of the project and paid for everything related to maintenance. She looked for sponsors, negotiated with hotels, was responsible for editing and channel on YouTube, as well as for covering the project in the media. And so it happened that a couple of days before the flight to Vladivostok, already in Moscow, the project from a single autonomous race turned into a race with an escort and a team.

In Vladivostok, Max bought a minibus , broken by time , for 120 thousand. I no longer needed some of the equipment, and some had to buy in addition. Equip a minibus, a bottle of water for 20 liters, a generator for charging equipment, a stove for cooking and many other little things.

This radically changed the matter. In fact, it completely changed one project for another.

Start

In Vladivostok, I did several preparatory runs of 15-20 km in the city and on the Russky Island. It was necessary to get closer to the loads and acclimatize after snow and winter to a milder climate. I also went to the VDC Ocean on an excursion , to get acquainted with the third largest children’s center in Russia. I worked in Orlyonok, in Artek I managed to climb a little as an illegal and stand with a tent.

Состояние её оставляло желать лучшего, везде были здоровенные щели, машинка еле шла и потихоньку разваливалась. Уже тогда была мысль, что же сломается раньше она или я.

Старт был 31го марта с центральной площади Владивостока. Из народа были я, Макс, мои друзья и телевидение с России1. Погодка была неплохая, ни снега, ни дождя и солнце не жарило как сумасшедшее, просто прекрасно! После основательной разминки мы выдвинулись в путь.

At first, I ran with a backpack through the city, followed by a car with journalists and a camera, followed by Max. But already 15 minutes later it was just me and the city, well, the backpack as a passenger on my back.

The first 20 km went everything like in training, only we stopped every now and then to film the moment on video and moved on again. The border of the city and now in front of me is a path to the horizon, and then further and further.

I often stopped to take a photo to take a rest, often just took a step. At that time, there was only one unofficial marathon in my life – a distance of 42.2 km in one race. On the first day I ran and walked 60 km and I don’t think it is worth saying how tired I was by the end of the day.

It was amazing that the next day I can move and even run. However, without deception, the forces were much less than on the first day of the journey. I will say that when you start to actively engage in physical education, running, rock climbing, bodybuilding, the most difficult is the first two weeks, during which you will go through several stages. It looks like this:

  • the first day is cheerful and cheerful , at the end of the day tired and happy
  • the morning of the second day is more difficult , and the movements are wadded. You seem to be slipping a little, but after half an hour you enter a normal pace. You get tired more often, and in the evening you feel that tin is approaching
  • The third day is not yet hell, but you do not know about it . In the morning, the muscles do not obey, it is very difficult to get involved in the process. In the evening, after finishing the run, I got up, I could not walk. For about 15 minutes I crawled into a cafe and only after dinner my legs let go
  • Even in spite of the rest of 4 and 5 days, this is hell . Run 5 km, then walk, run, rest, run again, step and rest. Such a carousel until the evening. The hardest part of the journey.
  • From the 6th day you start to pour in, you slowly come back to normal . It turns out that something about the third day feels like, but by the evening you just get tired, without numbness of the limbs
  • I returned to the sensations of the second day for a discount on the 10th day of running (not counting two weekends)
  • And after two weeks he could run as on the start day, sometimes switching to a step
  • From the third week, there were noticeable successes, and I approached the jogging / snacking / jogging / lunch / rest / jogging / snacking / running regimen, and micro-pauses for taking photos and filming videos.

Corns

A real scourge! Corns . Especially the first weeks, it’s just a nightmare!

They began to appear on the pads of the feet and between the toes already on the second day , the little fingers and ring fingers were especially affected. It’s one thing, when you rub your leg in the city, then, at least, take a break and walk carefully. All no problems, just inconveniences. This is not the case at all in this race. You can’t just get out of the way or leave for a few weekends every time. Yes, even just stop and handle the suffering place with high quality is very inconvenient. There is only a roadside, a patch of queens, a needle with alcohol and crooked tired hands. And what is the most unpleasant thing on a multi-day race, one corn provokes another and may well cause more serious injuries , since the running technique seriously breaks down.

What to do? So let’s go! Better not to get a corn at all ! Do not run for more than two hours in a row, in uncomfortable shoes, on asphalt, sand and dust, or in the rain. Well, it is advisable to change socks every three times a day and flavored legs with cream or petroleum jelly. Sometimes a system of two thin socks on one leg works.

If the moment is missed and the calluses are your new friend, then it is better to pierce with a disinfected needle (alcohol or heat to red with a lighter, disinfect, and then prick), release the liquid carefully, then glue the plaster tightly, without unnecessary seams and irregularities, you can add cream.

On a jog or an emergency race, you can quickly put a plastic bag under your toe and run 5-10 km without pain.

Food and Water

A whole layer of information is energy on the way and its restoration . There are systems, many systems for how to eat during a marathon, and there is a multi-day race. Bars and gels are good, but in the forests and fields of Siberia you can’t fill up, you can’t find it, and you can whine from the monotony.

According to Strava , 6,000 calories were consumed per day and 8,000+ for a 100km run. I think this is close to the truth, albeit somewhat overstated. So, what about food, where to get energy?

Да самая обычное питание в столовых и кафе, перекусы в течение всего, дня вполне обеспечивают необходимой энергией. Единственное, что нужно делить на еду легко усваиваемую и тяжело усваиваемую, как по времени, так и по типу. Углеводы – наш друг, идут хорошо, но на одних углеводах далеко не убежишь. Белки прекрасно! Но нужно время, чтобы организм научился их усваивать в пути, а с жирами ещё сложнее. Постепенно организм осиливает и их, метаболизм становится диким, но всегда рискуешь не справиться и получить тяжёлый живот. В любом случае его получишь если съешь больше, чем нужно. Тут лучше чаще и маленькими порциями. Обед хочется сделать длиннее и полноценнее, но на бег после этого можно и не выйти, что плохо.

Мне нравится система: разминочный на час, хороший завтрак без перебора, бег до обеда с перекусами (в идеале до обеда завершить всё дистанцию, но я пока до такого не дошёл), отдых час, два или даже три, снова бег с перекусами и ужин. Частота перекусов по вкусу, по самочувствию.

По перекусам полно инфы в инете. Бананы, другие фрукты, орехи, шоколад, каши быстро завариваемые, возможны бутеры и горячие напитки для ускорения усвоения.

По воде общей статистики нет. Пьёшь по самочувствию. С булькающим животом бежать неприятно, а обезвоживание съест все силы. Тут нужно чувствовать свой организм, научится этому следует до старта длительных забегов. За день может уходить от 2х до 8ми литров воды, не считая воду в пище.

Большую часть пути я бежал на воде и чае на перекусах. Изотоники не использовал. Уже после двух месяцев мне задарили банку с изотоником и стал добавлять, по самочувствию пользы столько же сколько от задаренного спортивного питания – невозможно отличить от их полного отсутствия. Ощущения мои, ничего не утверждаю и не советую в этом, смотрите, пробуйте сами.

Ночевки

Большая часть ночевок была в микроавтобусе. У меня спальник ещё с туристических времён, у Макса тоже, но ему приходилось добавлять накидку – одеяло, ибо спальник явно был не по сезону.

Так как стартовали мы в конце марта было достаточно холодно ночью. Рекорд -11 градусов. В дырявой машине это жесть. Даже в палатке было бы теплее, за счет сохранения тепла. Утром машинку погрел и можно выходить из анабиоза, делать зарядку и в бой!

Палатка была с собой. Изредка пользовались и ей, когда стало потеплее. Вроде и хорошо, но нужно время, чтобы поставить, собрать, просушить и т.д. Зато спать свободнее и комфортнее.

Иногда останавливались и в отелях. Когда проходили города или получалось договориться с отелями на трассе, напомню, что эту задачу по связям у нас выполнял специальный человек в Москве. Гостиницы – это прекрасное место отдохнуть, помыться, постираться и перевести дух. Маленькие островки цивилизации на нашем пути.

Бытовуха

Everyday life on such a journey is very specific and without it, nowhere. I’ll tell you about the moments that remain in my memory.

From time to time, Max cooked food on the fire and on the burner. He constantly cooked sandwiches for snacks. He drove 5-10 km ahead and while I reached the parking lot he managed to cook something.

Laundry and bath procedures often had to be arranged in the cold water of the Russian rivers. Those who go hiking will remember these wonderful moments. I also had to dry things on the go. In the car, they pulled ropes and hung garlands of damp things, not everything had time to dry in a day. And it was necessary to wash often, otherwise it would have turned out to be complete unsanitary conditions and with this you could run away to the hospital.

The wheelbarrow was constantly breaking down . I had to start with a push. In the morning, mmm … a fairy tale, a good bonus to push the minibus, when your legs still haven’t moved away from yesterday. Or during the day, you run, you run and the car stopped, you need help! And then she completely died. I had to get acquainted with the autonomous running for ten days, and Max with new acquaintances tried to resurrect our iron friend. It didn’t work out and Max traded it for another van, which also didn’t inspire confidence. It used to overheat every two hours, waiting for a complete replacement of the boiled liquid, well, sometimes you still need to push!

I burned two jogging pants one day . Somewhere liquid was flowing from the battery, and it interacted very actively, but imperceptibly, with the fabric of the pants. Something I was able to sew up, something I threw out.

Sneakers ! The first pair were beautiful and time-tested. Asics Gel Contend 4, bought at a discount for less than three thousand. We ran more than 2000 km, but it was scary to look at them, and how many times have I sewn them up! But they were very comfortable and I couldn’t find a replacement for them. After Khabarovsk, civilization ended with sports goods stores. I bought demixes from Sportmaster – what a mistake it was! Hello to the new wave of blisters and inconveniences, but I kept on running.

Weekend

Once every 5-7 days, and at the beginning and more often we arranged weekends to recuperate or repair equipment. Even taking into account the weekend, the average speed was about 43 km per day, because I tried to run about 60 km per day.

Выходные – это время пополнить запасы, восстановить силы, познакомиться с местностью и городами по пути, закупиться всем необходимым и постирать вещи. Не было такого, чтобы лёг спать и пролежал весь день, просто потому, что каждый выполнял много задач кроме основных – бега и вождения.

Было два вида выходных – на природе и в городе. В городе – это обычно гостиница и небольшая экскурсия, а на природе это речки озёра и отдых у костра. Интересно, что комаров и мошкары почти не было. Только ближе к Байкалу это стало меняться и вечером без штанов можно было долго хлопать себя по ляшкам даже во время бега.

Погода

Старт был в конце марта это уже не зима, но заморозки мы немного зацепили. В некоторых регионах были снегопады, а ночная температура опускалась до -10. В то же время ближе к лету начались жаркие деньги, где температура прогревалась до +30 градусов. Частенько моросили дожди. Они не сильно влияли на бег, если не длились больше нескольких часов к ряду. В это время можно было сделать перерыв и немного отдохнуть. Но много км я пробежал в мокрую погоду, благо снаряга позволяла. Жаль не было водооталкиивающих кроссовок, может быть бежать было бы проще.

Ещё отмечу ветреные дни. Ветер в спину ты не чувствуешь он не помогает и не мешает, а вот встречный ветер это испытание. Когда ты много часов бежишь, борясь с ветром силы заканчиваются невероятно быстро. Ну и всегда складывается впечатление, что всегда ветер встречный.

Автомобиль и Макс

Макс Чебыкин – мой напарник по проекту. Хоть и не бежал рядом со мной, но отвечал за многие стороны проекта. В первую очередь это сопровождение на пути. Макс вёл машину, которую купил во Владивостоке. Так же Макс записывал видео, организовывал связь между командой и людьми поддерживающими наш проект, частенько готовил еду, поддерживал хорошее настроение в команде и вообще делал много много всего. Без него проект вероятнее всего мог и не получится, в таком виде и сопровождением точно.

We had only two cars on the entire route. Both are Japanese vans in a horribly wrecked state. Here, of course, the question is about the project budget, which was incredibly small due to the short preparation time of the entire project. For example, Max took about a week to decide on participation and preparation. I have much more, but the work was carried out simultaneously in many different directions.

Puffy and breaking minibuses still drove and carried all our junk, and often served as some kind of overnight stay. All transport costs were borne by Max and Olga, so I can’t write about them in more detail here.

Support and meetups on the way

All the way, from start to finish, we met people who shared our goals and welcomed along the way. These were ordinary residents of cities and villages who came out to meet, these were hotel owners who invited them to their vacation, these were running clubs and runners who shared their valuable experience with me. Separately, I will note the drivers of heavy trucks, honking and waving towards them. Some even stopped and gave small gifts.

Also, on the Internet, many were carried away by my goal, in the VKontakte group and on the YouTube channel. And these were not only runners, but other adventurers as well. Especially a lot was written from my small homeland, there are not many such madmen like me.

По пути я встречал много велосипедистов пересекающих страну, был даже очень интересный мужичок завершающий свой трек от моря до моря. Он ехал один, полностью на свои средства и очень по бюджетному. Мы задарили ему банку варенья, которым нас угостили в Чите.

Финиш

Три месяца с момента старта забега я пытался получить заработанные зимой деньги, но мне это так и не удалось. То есть и ¾ запланированных на забег денег я так и не получил, а четверть уже была потрачена. Это ставило в неудобное положение. Без денег существенно повышался шанс навредить собственному здоровью, а цель была испытать силы, но не получить травм. Мне, конечно, предложили небольшую материальную поддержку заинтересованные пробегом люди. Тем не менее принять эту поддержку я не мог. Такого помощь непредсказуемая, да и затраты можно было покрыть самые минимальные. Здоровье дороже.

Было принято решение завершать пробег около Байкала. На это хватало средств и там заканчивался значимый участок маршрута. Примерно 4000 км от старта, после которого начинались бескрайний леса и поля. Финишем стал небольшой городок – Байкальск из которого мы отправились отмечать свои дни рождения в Саянские горы.

Итоги

  • Испытал ли я свои силы – определённо да! Физически и психологически я выдержал мощнейшее испытание, которое сам организовал, не без помощи друзей, конечно.
  • Прошёл ли я всю поставленную дистанцию? Нет. Мне очень хотелось бы преодолеть всю дистанцию от границы до границы, но есть уровень риска, на который я не готов пойти, ради достижения данной задачи. Я считаю, что нужно трезво оценивать сложившиеся ситуации. Единственное, что мне жаль, что я так и не смог разрешить сложившуюся ситуацию по финансам, но выводы я сделал.
  • Готов ли я заниматься чем-то таким и дальше? Определённо да, особенно если больше уделять времени подготовке и организации процесса. Ведь испытание я для этого и проводил, чтобы знать, на что я способен, что я могу, а над чем ещё нужно работать. Ну и к прочему, бег как процесс, как и автостоп уже является доброй частью моей жизни и мне действительно приятно им заниматься и развиваться в этом.
